Ms. Julie Williams & Ms. Kelly Johnson (Lower Elementary) July 2008 Dear Parents of Rising First and Second Grade Students: We look forward to being your child's teachers this coming year. Enclosed you will find information regarding the 2008-2009 school year for your child. Below we have listed some suggested summer activities to reinforce skills learned from the Pre-Primary program. These activities will help your child be better prepared to transition into their new class. 1. Reading each day. Perhaps keep a journal to record all of the books read over the summer. Please also read to your child as their reading ability remains well below their comprehension ability at this age.   2. Keep a daily journal of any vacations. Include experiences, activities, and photographs. These can be wonderful items for sharing next year. 3. Play games with math flash cards in addition and subtraction. We are enclosing a supply list for the year. Your child can bring these items on the Student Orientation Day, which is scheduled for August 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., or these items may be dropped off in the classroom anytime the week of August 18th. Student Orientation Day is for rising first levels, new students and their parents only. This is a time for the children to explore their new classroom with their parents, to meet their teachers and for parents to receive pertinent information regarding the routines, policies, and procedures of the Lower Elementary Class. We strongly recommend that each new Lower Elementary student attend orientation with their parent as this will ease their transition into their new environment. Please contact us the week of August 18th if you are unable to attend orientation (247-5745). During your visit, take a moment to choose from the list of volunteer opportunities offered for involvement in your child’s education. All parents are expected to give their time and support to the programs at Discovery. We have many events throughout the school year where parents may assist with activities. Being involved not only helps your child, but it offers a chance to meet other parents and establish new friendships. Our first day of school will be Monday, August 25th, 2008. Our day begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m. Your child is expected to be in proper uniform everyday except for optional dress days. This policy is strictly enforced. Have a wonderful, restful summer. We look forward to meeting and working with you and your children this upcoming year.
